School Visits at Storholmen Viking Village
Living History and Hands-On Learning in a Viking Village
Welcome to Storholmen Viking Village! Here, school groups can step into a historical setting and discover what life was like during the Iron Age through storytelling, teamwork, games and traditional crafts.
Our educational programmes offer an engaging, hands-on way for pupils to explore history. The activities are linked to the Swedish national curriculum (Lgr22) and cover topics such as everyday life in the past, how societies developed, cultural encounters and the connections between past and present.
A Day Full of Discovery
During their visit, pupils meet people dressed in historical clothing and explore life in the village. Through a range of activities, they learn about how people worked together, the importance of family and community, and how trade and contact with other parts of the world influenced life in the Roslagen region.
Activities may include:
Viking Age Games: Take part in traditional games and challenges that encourage teamwork, movement and cooperation.
Bread Baking over an Open Fire: Discover traditional cooking methods and try baking bread using flour and herbs.
Wool Crafts: Learn how wool was used to make clothing and other everyday items.
Runes, Beliefs and Traditions: Explore runes, ancient beliefs and how people understood the world around them.
A Historical Walk: Visit the burial ground and surrounding landscape while learning how people lived, remembered their dead and carried out burial rituals.
Activities are adapted to the age of the pupils, the size of the group and the weather conditions.
Experience History Together
At Storholmen, pupils learn by doing, exploring and working together. The historical surroundings provide a starting point for discussions about how people lived in the past and what has changed—or remained similar—in our lives today.
The visit also offers opportunities to explore cultural encounters, different roles in society and how people’s living conditions have varied throughout history. This makes history more tangible, engaging and relevant to pupils’ own lives.

School visits take place at Storholmen Viking Village, just north of Norrtälje. A visit usually lasts approximately four hours, including breaks.
Pupils should bring their own packed lunch. The possibility of cooking over an open fire may be available by prior arrangement.
