Activities

Summer open

2010: 19 july – 6 august 12-16

During summer the village is opened for tourists and visitors.
For visits other times of the year you are welcome to book a visit or a guided tour.

You can see and learn handicraft from the "Viking age people" in the village during the summer. You will meet blacksmiths, hirdmen, wool workers and other craftsmen, and you may attempt to forge something in the smithy, make glass beads, spin yarn, or bake your own flatbread over the fire. The rune master and his apprentice will teach you the secret of the runes. The chief and housewife tell you all you wish to know about the Viking age, life and livelihood.

During special occasions the sound of a horn will echo over the village. This signals the start of a special event. It may be an exhibition of Viking-like games, sword fighting, singing and music, or a storyteller divulging tales from the Nordic mythology. Several reconstructed buildings create an atmospheric setting; a pit house, enclosed pastures with animals, an herbal garden, an outdoor smithy, an open cooking house, a woodhouse for sagas, a sacrificial place, two rune stones and various roofs and storage buildings.

In the Viking Village there is also an exhibition hall where you can read about the everyday life in Viking age.

  • In the hall there is a café with lighter refreshments.
  • In walking distance from the village, there is a beach and two restaurants.
  • Next to the village is a nature preservation area and late iron age burial field.

Viking activities for the entire family!

Upon entering the village you are greeted by the ringing sound of the blacksmith, the echo of song in the distance, and the smell of smoke, tar, and freshly baked bread. Here you will meet exciting people and Vikings from the east and the west that teach you ancient handicrafts and tells you about the life in Viking age. Now and then during the day, the regular chores are interrupted by various activities, such as music, lectures, sagas and games. At Storholmen you are not simply an observer, but an active participant in everything that happens!
