About the Vikingvillage of Storholmen
The Viking village is beautifully situated near the lake Erken. Just around the corner lies an ancient burialground housing 166 burialmounds and ancient remnants. This area is also a beautiful nature reservation with several hundred year-old oaks.
Chickens cackling, goats bleating, the scents of tar and freshly baked bread are carried with the wind. At a distance, ringing hammer blows are heard, where the village smith is finishing a brooch on the anvil. A long dance is twirling to the low beat of the drum and the high-spirited chirp of the flute. The line of dancers glides closer to you, and before you know it, you are a part of the dance. As a visitor to the Viking Village Storholmen, you are not merely a visitor, but an active participant in everything that is happening.
The Viking Village Storholmen is a living out-door Viking museum, beautifully situated near LakeErken, ten kilometers north of the coastal town of Norrtälje, Roslagen. It is situated in the midst of an exciting and historically important region that shows traces of substantial connections to the Eastern countries. There are lots of old remnants from the Viking Age in this area. Grave fields and runestones surround the village, and right next to it is a large burial field from the late Iron Age with 166 burial mounds and remains. The burial ground is set within a beautiful nature reserve with giant oaks, several hundred years old.
The Viking Village is run by a foundation and has a non-profit support association. The purpose of the village is to re-animate history, and in a tangible way give people of different ages and backgrounds an exciting insight into the Viking Age, by giving them the opportunity to try ancient handicrafts and other activities first-hand.
